5 October  The Nobel Peace Prize 2018 awarded to Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad for

Courageously combating war crimes and seeking justice for victims

Both laureates have made a crucial contribution to focusing attention on, and combating, war crimes. Denis Mukwege is the helper who has devoted his life to defending these victims. Nadia Murad is the witness who tells of the abuses perpetrated against herself and others. Each of them in their own way has helped to give greater visibility to war-time sexual violence, so that the perpetrators can be held accountable for their actions.

WASTE

Let’s all welcome the European Union (EU) to the anti-plastic pollution movement.

Recently, EU lawmakers voted 571 to 53 in favor of a complete ban on 10 single-use plastics including straws, cutlery, and coffee stirrers. This adds the EU to the growing list of governments committed to helping the world address its plastic waste problem.

“Europe has to come to terms with the fact that we cannot just put it on someone else’s shoulders,” EU Commission First Vice President Frans Timmermans told Reuters. “If we don’t move now, if we don’t move swiftly…you will have more plastic in the oceans than fish.”

’In July 2014 a model walked down a catwalk and into history. The yellow dress she was wearing was made out of blue jeans that had been recycled with re:newcell technology. It was the first garment in the world that had been made from chemically recycled used textiles. It was also the first re:newcell production of a fully recycled garment, soon to be followed by other dresses, a t-shirt, children’s pyjamas and scarf. Two years later six more re:newcell garments could be seen on the catwalk during the Berlin Ethical Fashion Week.

Rotten fish to help power Hurtigruten cruise ships after refit

Oslo, Nov 16 - The Nordic region’s most high-profile cruise fleet operator is refitting its ships to make them less polluting, and plans to use a byproduct of rotten fish to help power their new, cleaner engines.

Norway’s Hurtigruten, best known for the ships that ferry tourists along the country’s fjords and coastline and up into the Arctic, is investing 7 billion crowns ($826 million) over three years to adapt its 17-strong fleet

Six of its older vessels will be retrofitted to run on a combination of liquefied natural gas (LNG), electric batteries and liquefied bio gas (LBG).  Reuters

CLIMATE VICTORIES

Spain has recently announced that the country will lay down most of its coal mines by the end of the year.
Dagens Nyheter

26 of November. The Swedish girl Greta Thunberg 15 year old, inspires millions and pupils worldwide about focusing on climate- change. She is leading a school strike and sits outside of the Swedish Parliament, in an effort to force politicians to act on climate change on the COP 24 conferece  2-14 of December in Poland.

Countries like Sweden need to start reducing our emissions by at least 15 per cent every year if we consider the aspect of equality or climate justice – a principle that is clearly stated everywhere in the Paris Agreement. And that is just so we can stay below 2 degrees, which we now know will still create misery for so many people and ecosystems around the world.
